It actually stands for “Open Authorization” protocol. It is actually a delegation protocol that allows someone who controls a resource (e.g. my photos) to delegate access to someone/something else (e.g. an app). Not dissimilar to a valet key.

The open authentication protocols are SAML (Secure Assertion Markup Language) and Open ID Connect.
